Recently, I was asked by Mr. Peter Hastings (NH DoIT Commissioner) to take a
look at cloud development concepts and see if there was any benefit for our
development teams across the enterprise. After some investigation I could see
that if all users/developers were on one server that contained all the
licenses for the tool and the assets were centralized, and the SCM tool was
standardized, the state could save money in various ways on activities
related to software development and transform state government with more
status accounting and visibility into software development not only for state
developers but contractors as well.
I met with Commissioner Hastings and explained that developers would have
less of a learning curve from department to department if the tool was
standardized. The only thing the developer would have to learn is the
application to develop cod... (more)

IT organizations face a growing demand for faster innovation and new
applications to support emerging opportunities in social, mobile, growth
markets, Big Data analytics, mergers and acquisitions, strategic
partnerships, and more. This is great news because it shows that IT continues
to be a key stakeholder in delivering business service innovation. However,
it also means that IT must deliver new innovation despite flat budgets, while
maintaining existing services that grow more complex every day.
The 'Cloud of Clouds'
This is where cloud computing can help to deliver business outcomes,
especially if you look beyond just one or two cloud providers, to the almost
limitless variety of interconnected and intermediated cloud services - what I
call the 'cloud of clouds'. This is true especially for founda... (more)

Consumers are a funny bunch. We want to be first with the latest hot
smartphone. We want flawless experiences when we deal with online services
and don't deal with slow responsiveness well. While our want for new devices
is good for the device manufacturers, our lack of patience can be a thorn in
the side of carriers as the try to deal with the influx of people buying new
devices when they're released.
When it was just the Apple iPhone and a limited number of outlets, the
carriers only had to plan a new release about once a year and didn't have
much competition; if the user experience wasn't the best, customers couldn't
flee to an alternative carrier. Now, carriers have multiple popular
smartphone platforms (the Samsung Galaxy 4 sold 10 million phones in its
first month), more competition (almost all carriers have the iPhone now), and
a need to deliver a great expe... (more)

Oracle Keynote at Cloud Expo
Cloud Computing News - Oracle co-president Charles Phillips was supposed to
become CEO of CA - for all its muddied skirts still one of the world's
largest software companies - and then those "soul mates forever" billboards
popped up in New York, Atlanta and San Francisco, exposing his near
decade-long bi-coastal double life with wife and son in the East and a
live-in girlfriend in the West.
Six days after Phillips was forced to admit that a picture of him and his
ex-girlfriend canoodling was hanging over Times Square, CA named board member
and executive chairman Bill McCracken CEO. He's the guy who's been running
the company since John Swainson's reportedly forced retirement was announced
in September. An ex-IBMer and an ex-Swainson pal, it was no secret he really
wanted the job.
