Cloud-Chasing To Cost CA 1,000 Jobs

CA Session at Cloud Expo CA has looked into its crystal ball and now realizes that it might have been a tad ambitious in forecasting earnings of $1.60-$1.71 this fiscal year, pushing Wall Street to expect $1.69. It'll probably come in on the low end of its guidance, it says, something Credit Suisse, for one, blames on expenses. So, apparently, does CA. Therefore, in the name of "profitable growth" and efficiency, it's going to terminate a thousand people, about 8% of its global workforce, to right-size for its new cloud computing strategy. The move will include consolidating more of its facilities to reduce real estate costs as well as further rationalizing its product portfolio. CA said most of the cuts would be in North America and most people would know they're laid off by the end of April; the rest won't know until the end of September. In a memo to employees T... (more)

The Cloud and the Mainframe: Bringing the Best of Both Worlds Together

Mainframe system or cloud computing? IT organizations don't necessarily have to choose. Many mainframe advocates would argue that developing a private cloud would be redundant, as the mainframe provides the flexible, agile and always available environment promised with cloud computing. And those looking to bring cloud computing into their environments shouldn't assume the mainframe won't be a factor. "We are inventing the new mainframe in a sense. The internal private cloud is taking the application hosting and delivery infrastructure and managing it as a service. It has all the pieces it had before, but now you have to think of it in a service-oriented approach," says Jim Frey, research director at Enterprise Management Associates (EMA). "It is not separate from the mainframe; the mainframe will be included in an evolutionary role. The cloud is forcing organizatio... (more)

Cassatt Collapses into CA

After weeks of slow-moving negotiations and due diligence, CA has bought what it describes as "certain data center automation and policy-based optimization expertise and assets from Cassatt," the failed Bill Coleman start-up that used up $100 million in venture money on its way to this inglorious end. CA isn't saying what it paid but the 451 Group figures it's a "low multiple." It thinks Cassatt did about $12 million last year, a figure that could be high. Cassatt only had a dozen customers - and a promising pipeline according to what Coleman said a few weeks ago. He has since become telephone and email shy. Cassatt had a problem figuring out exactly what it wanted to be during its six-year run. Since the cloud chatter started last year, it's identified with that. CA was Cassatt's last shot at anything that resembled a dignified exit. The start-up, which liked to t... (more)

Building the Next-Generation Datacenter - A Detailed Guide / Stage 2

IT organizations today are experiencing pressure to not only adopt new and emerging technologies like virtualization, but also reduce costs and do more with fewer resources (thus reducing CapEx) - all while delivering assurance of capacity and performance to the business. In the first part of this article, we provided a brief overview of the CA Technologies virtualization maturity lifecycle and focused on the server consolidation stage. Although server consolidation helps efficient use of available compute resources and reduces the total number of physical servers in the data center, organizations that have successfully consolidated their server environment and are progressing on their virtualization journey often find it difficult to virtualize tier 1 workloads. They also face significant challenges in utilizing the hosts at a higher capacity. This happens because ... (more)

Cloud Development Using SCM 12.5

Recently, I was asked by Mr. Peter Hastings (NH DoIT Commissioner) to take a look at cloud development concepts and see if there was any benefit for our development teams across the enterprise. After some investigation I could see that if all users/developers were on one server that contained all the licenses for the tool and the assets were centralized, and the SCM tool was standardized, the state could save money in various ways on activities related to software development and transform state government with more status accounting and visibility into software development not only for state developers but contractors as well. I met with Commissioner Hastings and explained that developers would have less of a learning curve from department to department if the tool was standardized. The only thing the developer would have to learn is the application to develop cod... (more)
