IT organizations face a growing demand for faster innovation and new
applications to support emerging opportunities in social, mobile, growth
markets, Big Data analytics, mergers and acquisitions, strategic
partnerships, and more. This is great news because it shows that IT continues
to be a key stakeholder in delivering business service innovation. However,
it also means that IT must deliver new innovation despite flat budgets, while
maintaining existing services that grow more complex every day.
The 'Cloud of Clouds'
This is where cloud computing can help to deliver business outcomes,
especially if you look beyond just one or two cloud providers, to the almost
limitless variety of interconnected and intermediated cloud services - what I
call the 'cloud of clouds'. This is true especially for founda... (more)

Lock-in has been the proverbial chain of the IT industry and around the world
users are uniting to make the cloud "lock-in free." New association's such as
EuroCloud, the Open DataCenter Alliance are being formed, while established
industry bodies like SNIA and OASIS are working on new open cloud standards
and communities like cloud commons are investing in completely new
In his session at the 8th International Cloud Expo, Gregor Petri, Advisor
Lean IT and Cloud Computing at CA Technologies, will dissect lock-in and more
specifically cloud lock-in into its archetypes and look at possible
architectural, organizational and commercial remedies. Using examples and
analogies from both the IT and other industries, he will explore whether
there can be "another way," a way that allows cloud users to have rich
Recently, I was asked by Mr. Peter Hastings (NH DoIT Commissioner) to take a
look at cloud development concepts and see if there was any benefit for our
development teams across the enterprise. After some investigation I could see
that if all users/developers were on one server that contained all the
licenses for the tool and the assets were centralized, and the SCM tool was
standardized, the state could save money in various ways on activities
related to software development and transform state government with more
status accounting and visibility into software development not only for state
developers but contractors as well.
I met with Commissioner Hastings and explained that developers would have
less of a learning curve from department to department if the tool was
standardized. The only thing the developer would have to learn is the
application to develop cod... (more)

Everyone wants to lower their capital expenditures and increase operational
efficiency - it's a sign of the times. The economy of the past 12 - 18 months
has forced all organizations to do more with less and become more efficient.
While everyone can identify with the request to do more with less, they can
also identify with the overwhelming need to deliver quality.
The need to deliver qualit... (more)

As public, private and hybrid cloud are becoming mainstream and applications
are transitioning to these complex environments, IT has to effectively manage
applications running on mobile devices to legacy mainframes and traditional
multi-tier application servers and everywhere in the middle. Operational
complexity due to running applications in the diverse and distributed
environment makes it difficult for IT to have complete control over the
environment. At the same time, tolerance for application downtime is
decreasing, the cost of service slowdowns and interruptions is increasing,

The New Modern Family: Business + Development + Operations = BizDevOps
by Anand Akela
Hello, from a new member of AppDynamics team. I recently joined the team to
lead application performance management (APM) product marketing.
Last month, when I was talking with Jyoti Bansal, CEO of AppDynamics, he
shared his vision for the company. Where the market is heading and how
application performance and end-user experience insights can influence
business outcome. This conversation not only cemented my decision to join the
company, but also I came back with a quest to learn more about a term he used

read a blog by Larry Dragich. After reading some of the comments about the
strategic importance of APM for Line of Business, I thought of sharing some

Women in DevOps
It's been proven time and time again that in tech, diversity drives greater
innovation, better team productivity and greater profits and market share.
What can we do in our DevOps teams to embrace diversity and help transform
the culture of development and operations into a true "DevOps" team?
In her session at DevOps Summit, Stefana Muller, Director, Product Management
- Continuous Delivery at CA Technologies, answered that question citing
examples, showing how to create opportunities for diverse candidates and
taking feedback from the audience on their experiences with encouraging
diversity in technology roles.

Enterprises are seeking cloud computing efficiency benefits, subsequent lower
total costs, and a highly valued ability to better deliver flexible services
that support agile business processes.
Turns out so-called private clouds, or those cloud computing models that
enterprises deploy and/or control on-premises, have a lot in common with
longstanding mainframe computing models and techniques. Back to the future,
you might say.
New developments in mainframe automation and other technologies increasingly
support the use of mainframes for delivering cloud-computing advantages --
and help accelerate the ability to solve recession-era computing challenges
around cost, power, energy use and reliability.
